One of the most common things women say when they start thinking about a portrait session is: “I don’t even know what I would wear.” Fair.
Most people imagine they need an entire suitcase full of elaborate lingerie, expensive sets, or something straight out of a fashion campaign. The truth? You probably already have everything you need. I proved that to myself recently in Las Vegas.
The Light Was Too Good to Ignore
I packed a small carry-on for the trip. Nothing fancy. Just a few basics thrown into my suitcase. Then I walked into my hotel suite and saw the window light. Photographers know that moment. The room was glowing. The kind of light you can’t recreate with equipment. So I did what any photographer would do. I turned the room into a studio and shot an impromptu session using only what I packed in that carry-on.
Everything Came Out of One Suitcase
Here’s exactly what I used for the shoot:
- lace bodysuit
- white bodysuit
- simple white tank top
- black bra
- black panties
- white panties
- nude panties
- black knee-high socks
And of course…nude is always an option. That’s it. No elaborate styling. No racks of clothing. No fashion stylist. Just simple pieces that almost every woman already owns.
Why Simple Pieces Work So Well
The secret to a powerful portrait session isn’t complicated outfits. It’s movement. It’s confidence. It’s the way fabric sits on your body. A basic tank top can look incredible when it’s styled right. A black bra and panties can feel bold and confident. A bodysuit can completely change the shape of an image. Even something unexpected like knee-high socks can add personality and attitude. When the wardrobe is simple, the focus shifts where it belongs. To you. Your energy. Your presence. Your story.
You Don’t Need a Closet Full of Lingerie
This is something I tell my clients all the time. The best sessions often come from the simplest pieces. A sweater slipping off one shoulder. A tank top and underwear. A bodysuit you already love.
Sometimes the most powerful images come from the least complicated choices.
And sometimes…from nothing at all.
Don’t Let “I Don’t Have Anything to Wear” Stop You
If you’ve ever considered doing a portrait session but talked yourself out of it because you didn’t know what to bring, take this as proof. An entire shoot came out of one carry-on suitcase. You probably already have everything you need sitting in your dresser. The wardrobe is just the starting point. The experience is where the magic happens.
